“Until it is torn down”: Artists create in abandoned building in Istanbul – 2020
After the 2010s, old Istanbul buildings were being torn down supposedly to be rebuilt as earthquake resistant residences. In an abandoned building soon to be demolished, 16 artists got together and showcased their talents in the empty, dilapidated apartments. The exhibition affected me because it proved to me that art did not have to be confined to galleries but could be anywhere at all, that artists are not out of reach but could be your next-door neighbors. I loved the way the artists displayed their work alongside what remained of the residents, of the residents’ memories and that their work’s fate was intertwined with the building’s. This exhibition deeply affected me as a protest to gentrification. I thought to myself, “Just as these buildings are disappearing under the wrecking ball, so are our memories and our selves.”
